Botox and Juvederm

Injectable cosmetic fillers are a minimally invase preference to bring back the youthful contours to almost any of the areas of a face. There are available wide variety of substances today that can bring improvement and correction for facial tissues that has started to show the early signs of aging. Injectable dermal fillers can plump up the facial tissue to fill in the fine lines and wrinkles beneath the skin’s surface. Below are some of the most common problems that can be corrected using an injectable filler substances:

  • Nasolabial folds (the deep creases that run from the corners of the nostrils to the corners of the mouth)
  • Forehead wrinkles (the horizontal lines on the brow and vertical lines between the brows)
  • Lines around the mouth (marionette lines, smoker’s lines, and smile lines)
  • Wrinkles around the eyes (crow’s feet)
  • Hollows under the eyes
  • Loss of volume in the cheeks and lips
  • Depressions in the skin such as acne scars

Types of Cosmetic Fillers Available

Currently, there are five types of dermal fillers available in the United States. The largest of the group consists of hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers which are identical to a naturally produced acid in the human tissue. Some of the popular brand names may include:

  • Botox® Cosmetic
  • Dysport
  • Juvéderm
  • Restylane

These hyaluronic acid (HA) products are used to treat fine lines near the surface of the skin or to correct and lessen deeper creases and folds. Each products have a different formulation and the thickness of the gel is one of the factors that determine on how to use it with results that will last from 6 to 12 months. The results of a hyaluronic acid (HA) are only short term but patients who liked the results of it and need a deep tissue correction may consider the other options that are long lasting such as:

  • Radiesse (calcium hydroxylapatite) – This filler may last from 12 up to 18 months for some patients.
  • Artefill (polymethylmethacrylate) – This filler is considered “permanent” with results that may last longer than five years.

Another option that is long lasting if the graft is successful is an autologous fat or collagen transfer by using the patient’s own tissue.

What Does Treatment with Cosmetic Fillers Involve?

Cosmetic filler treatment is done on an outpatient basis by using a local anesthetic. The topical anesthetic numbing agent may be applied either as a nerve blockage or injected as part of the filler itself. The filler is injected only in small quantities to the selected spots to restore the lost volume of the face. Although this treatment have no downtime, some patients may suffer minor discomfort and cold compresses may be used to ease it. The benefits of this kind of skin rejuvenation are immediately noticeable but full results will take a few weeks to develop. The usual side effects are just minor and includes redness, swelling, sensitivity and bruising of the affected area which will diminish for a few days. Occasionally some side effects may be more significant and last longer and even in rare cases some bumps (granulomas) form under the skin. These side effects will resolve naturally and if not they may require proper medical treatment.

Cosmetic Fillers as Part of Full-Face RejuvenAtion

Cosmetic filler treatments are versatile and are often used in combination with other cosmetic procedures for optimized maximum improvement of the skin. A patient who is a candidate for a full facelift may benefit from the dermal filler treatment because it can add volume to the lost tissue of the skin. Other minimally invasive treatments like Botox® injections, laser resurfacing and thermage skin tightening can be combined to restore a youthful appearance of the face. An entire face makeover can be achieved through cosmetic dermal fillers.
